Operation Safe Driver Week 2026: The Ticket You Get July 12–18 Stays on Your CSA for 24 Months

Operation Safe Driver Week 2026: la multa del 12 al 18 de julio pesa 24 meses en tu CSA

Operation Safe Driver Week 2026 runs July 12–18, and it is the one enforcement week that goes after the driver, not the truck. Across the U.S., Canada and Mexico, officers will be pulling commercial vehicles over for reckless, careless and dangerous driving — speeding, distraction, aggressive driving, following too closely, no seat belt. For owner-operators running NJ, NY and the Northeast corridor, the real cost is not the fine. It is the 24 months that citation sits on your CSA and quietly closes doors you never see close.

What Operation Safe Driver Week 2026 actually targets

CVSA runs the campaign with FMCSA every July. This year's stated focus is reckless, careless and dangerous driving — defined broadly as operating without due care or in willful disregard for the safety of others. In practice, that means officers are watching behavior in the traffic stream before they ever look at your paperwork:

  • Speeding. The most common violation, year after year. In the 2025 campaign, enforcement issued 1,249 speeding warnings and 917 speeding tickets to commercial drivers.
  • Distracted driving. Phone in hand at a toll plaza is enough. Hands-free is not a suggestion in a CMV.
  • Following too closely. The classic Northeast trap — merging traffic on the Turnpike compresses your gap and an officer sees a tailgating truck, not a squeezed one.
  • Aggressive lane changes / improper passing. Judged by the officer, not by you.
  • Seat belt. The cheapest violation to avoid and still one of the most written.
The week in one line: this is a driver behavior blitz, not a vehicle blitz. You can pass a Level I inspection with a perfect truck and still leave with a citation that follows you for two years.

Why "just a warning" is never just a warning: the CSA math

A speeding citation during Safe Driver Week does not end at the shoulder. It is uploaded into your Unsafe Driving BASIC under CSA, where it is scored by severity and by how recent it is — and it stays in the 24-month window regardless of how clean the rest of your record looks. A single truck operation feels it hardest: with a tiny denominator of inspections, one violation moves your percentile far more than it moves a 200-truck fleet's.

A large fleet absorbs a speeding ticket. A one-truck authority wears it for two years.

And it no longer stops with insurance. Load boards and broker onboarding tools now read roadside violation history automatically. Your rate does not drop because a broker got mean — it drops because an algorithm scored your last 12 months before a human ever saw your MC number.

Your pre-week check: seven things to do before Sunday

  1. Set your following distance rule now. One second per 10 feet of vehicle length under 40 mph, plus one second above 40. Decide it in the yard, not at 62 mph on the Turnpike.
  2. Mount the phone and start the nav before you roll. Every "quick glance" this week is an expensive glance.
  3. Know your governed speed and stay under posted, not under governed. Officers write the posted limit, not your ECM setting.
  4. Seat belt on before the truck moves. It is the single easiest citation to never receive.
  5. Do a real pre-trip. A behavior stop can escalate into a full inspection. During International Roadcheck 2026 the vehicle out-of-service rate hit 32.8% — you do not want a routine stop turning into that.
  6. Carry your documents in one place. ELD records, medical card, insurance. A calm, organized stop is a shorter stop.
  7. If you get a citation, dispute it properly. Wrong data on the inspection report gets corrected through FMCSA's DataQs process — not by ignoring it and hoping it ages out.

One more thing worth knowing this month: on July 22, 2026 FMCSA drops the federal requirement that CDL holders self-report certain convictions to their home state. That is paperwork relief, not risk relief — the state still learns about the conviction through the electronic exchange between licensing agencies, and your disqualification exposure does not change. If you want the full picture of the July rule changes, read our breakdown of FMCSA's July 2026 rules, and make sure you have already cleared the July 20 revoked-ELD deadline. If English proficiency is a concern for a driver on your authority, the roadside ELP check is the other stop that ends in out-of-service.

Safe Driver Week is seven days. Your CSA score keeps the receipt for two years. Drive like the officer is behind you — because for the next week, statistically, he is.
